The 2017 growing season is upon us, and we are excited to announce that our latest vintage is ready!

After aging for nearly a year, we are pleased to announce the release of our 2015 red wine selection. Included in this release is a Merlot, a Cabernet Franc, and unique to G & W Winery, our exclusive Gemini.

The Merlot is soft on the palate and light-bodied.  It has a cherry aroma and an especially smooth finish.  Our Merlot is distinct and will leave a lasting impression at first taste.

Our Cabernet Franc has been met with rave reviews.  A parent to the ever-popular Cabernet Sauvignon, this Cabernet Franc will be a treat for those looking for something a little different. Boasting a full bodied nature with a hint of baking spices, this Cabernet Franc will mesmerize the palate and finish with a punch of dark berries. With the Millennial wine palate shifting towards the unique wine flavors, we are confident that our Cabernet Franc will bring a unique experience to wine drinkers of all ages.

Finally, we are excited to release our exclusive vintage, Gemini. Inspired by the twin daughters of our owner and the story of Castor and Pollux from Greek Mythology, Gemini is a Bordeaux style blend, which captures the best qualities of our Merlot and Cabernet Franc grapes to weave a tapestry of flavor that is unmatched by a single variety.

We also still have a limited supply of the 2015 Chardonnay and Pinot Grigio.  If you are interested, please contact us to reserve your bottles before they are gone.

2017 also marks a new opportunity for G & W Winery.  Beginning on June 28 and continuing every Tuesday until August 29, G & W Winery will be a vendor at the West Cape May Farmer's Market.

Located at 732 Broadway in West Cape May, NJ, this venue has become a local hot spot for produce, BBQ, antiques, live music, and now G & W Wine.  Stop by and say hello to one of our wine aficionados, sample our five varieties and take home a bottle to enjoy with your next meal.  Take advantage of our West Cape May Specials while supplies last.

Finally, we are thrilled to announce that starting on June 3, 2017, G & W Winery will be open for tours and sampling. Take a walk through our fields of wine grapes to see where the wine we produce originates. Sample our latest vintage before it releases to the public and relax in the serene setting that surrounds the vineyard.  If interested pleased contact us to set up a reservation.  We are thrilled to open our doors to you and can't wait to meet those of you that have helped to make G & W Winery what it has become.
Saturday, September 3 was a wonderful day at G & W Winery.  Our 2016 crush was an amazing success thanks in large part to the many volunteers, friends and members of the G & W family.  The grapes seemed to fly off the vines and we could not be more excited to begin our second year of production.  We would like to extend a special thank you to all that were able to join us on September 3.  Without all of your help the day would not have been close to as big of a success.

Fall 2016 also marks a giant step forward at G & W with the production of our red wine varieties getting bottled and very close to completion.  We are excited that our selection of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and our unique blend we call Gemini will be ready for sale in early 2017.  Be sure to get on our waiting list for the 2016 red selection.  Our supply is already starting to be accounted for.  Don't miss out on G & W's first red selections.

It is an exciting time for us at G & W.  We have bottled our first vintage of white wine.  Chardonnay and Pinot Grigio are available and have been met with rave reviews.

The G & W Chardonnay displays tropical fruit flavors with a subtle hint of vanilla and pink grapefruit, perfect for Summer days, better for cool Summer nights.  It is almost as though you can taste the sunset as the subtle flavors explode as you enjoy this vintage.

G & W Pinot Grigio is crisp yet elegant.  It opens with a bouquet of acacia flowers and presents with a semi-dry, well-balanced essence of crisp apple and ripe pear.  The Pinot Grigio is fantastic as a refreshing beverage choice for the warm dry days of Summer.

We are incredibly excited to offer both the Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay for this Summer season, but don't wait.  This vintage was done in a limited supply and these bottles are flying off our shelves.

If you are interested in purchasing our first vintage Pinot Grigio or Chardonnay, please contact us at (609) 948-0595.
Case discounts are available, but don't wait before we know it, this vintage will be gone.

The 2015 G&W Winery Christmas party was held at Mona Lisia in Williamstown, NJ. This restaurant has tremendous food and a fantastic atmosphere. We are also pleased to announce that Mona Lisia will be one of the first locations to have G&W Wines for sale starting in May 2016. Please visit the Mona Lisia Restaurant website by clicking the photo above and be ready to request G&W Wines in the near future.
Here at G & W Winery we have so much to be thankful for this year.  Good friends, loving families and time to spend with our loved ones.  With our company holiday party upon us, we wanted to take a moment to reflect on a big year that is about to end and look forward towards the great things planned for 2016.

2015 was a big year for G&W, with this year marking our first harvest and consequently our coming first vintage.  With the expansion of our line to now include Chardonnay, we are more excited than ever for our first bottling to be fast approaching.

G&W also had advances in our going green initiative this year.  The G&W Winery has now gone solar.  With the installation of eight solar panels, we are now operating at nearly 95% clean energy.  Our hope is to continue the push towards 100% in 2016.

2016 looks to be a big year for G&W.  We have our first bottling of Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay coming in roughly four months and we couldn't be more excited.  There are big things on the horizon for G&W and we can't wait for you all to see what we have in store for the coming year.

Finally, and most importantly, we would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to all that have supported us up to this point on this crazy ride.  Without the support of such great family and friends, we would not have made it as far as we have. Merry Christmas to all our family, friends and supporters. Thank you for your commitment to G&W Winery.  May God Bless you and enable us to continue to have the support of one another during the coming New Year.  Cheers!

First Harvest for G & W Winery in Cape May County

"It's been four years in the making but we are ready," said Dennis Hasson, proprietor of G&W Winery. "With 1,200 vines on five acres, we plan to produce 2,000 bottles of our debut wines.”

G&W, named after Hasson’s daughters, Grace and Willow, is the newest winery to enter the New Jersey wine scene.

“When Dennis came to school and asked if anyone wanted to help with his vineyard, I automatically said yes,” said Travis Thomas, a fellow teacher and one of the three proprietors at G&W. “I always wanted to be a farmer, but buying up land was too costly. This was an opportunity I had to take.”

The school Thomas refers to is Haddonfield Middle School in Haddonfield, New Jersey, where both are teachers. Finishing out the trio is school psychologist, Jerry Hellman, who is living out his dream of owning a vineyard at G&W.

“I always wanted a vineyard, but moving to California was out of the question,” said Hellman. “Twenty years ago, you couldn’t find a truly drinkable wine from New Jersey. Today, New Jersey vineyards have improved immensely.”

As one would expect from three career educators, everything about G&W will improve your knowledge of wine.

“One thing that most people are not aware of is all wine is white,” said Hasson. “Red wine goes through maceration, one week to 10 days where you let juice sit with its skins, and then you press it out and get red wine.”

Over Labor Day weekend, three types of French grapes were harvested at G&W: Pinot Gris, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc. The hot, dry climate and mild winters of Cape May County is optimal for growing grapes.

“The Merlot and Cabernet Franc will be blended for a Bordeaux style wine,” said Hasson. “We will only take the best grapes.”

Barrel Selection
G&W imported Zemplén barrels made of Hungarian Oak. According to the Zemplén website, the barrels give a unique and luxurious taste to wine.

“Hungarian Oak is gaining in popularity and people in the wine industry are saying it is really good,” said Hasson. “We are also using stainless steel since some people don’t like the flavor added by oak.”

Eco-friendly location
G&W is a rustic farm winery that is 100% off grid. No public utilities and no public water is used. All water comes from a well that is operated by solar power. The farm is cut out of the woods in the heart of Cape May County and is approximately two miles from the Atlantic Ocean and one mile from the Delaware Bay.

Future plans for the winery includes opening it up to the public with an outdoor seating area and bar, where Hellman is looking forward to retiring and working at the vineyard as a bartender. “After all, who would make a better bartender than a retired psychologist?”

Veraison at G & W
August 10, 2015

Veraison is an exciting time at the vineyard. It means "the onset of ripening" of the grapes. Veraison separates the colors of grapes and wine. It is now that the white wine grapes turn from green to golden, and red wine grapes start to show their true colors. Veraison is the moment when the sugar levels in the grapes begin to rise and the acid levels fall, setting phenolics in motion and getting us closer to the harvest.

The main problem with veraison is that it attracts birds which want to eat the grapes. They can sometimes eat entire clusters. Also, when birds break open a grape, the juice drips on the cluster which can attract insects and disease.

So veraison also means installing netting over the vines to keep the grapes safe from the birds. In the picture above, see the netting over the entire row of grapes. The grapes have turned color, which marks veraison and makes them easy to see.

Tending the Vines
 July 5, 2015

As the vines grow, they reach the third wire and then topple over or grow wildly in one direction. The top picture shows a row of vines that have not been tied back. They look much like Sideshow Bob from The Simpsons. Carefully training and tying the vines so that they are not growing wildly yet still can get air so the leaves and grapes are not matted together takes patience and time. The bottom picture shows the same rows after an hour of tending. This careful, painstaking process will result in the best vines which will produce the best grapes, which will make for great wine.
